This scale is just an indicator so walks can be chosen based upon fitness, confidence etc.

1 – Beginner short flat walk e.g. ½ mile flat walk along seafront

2 – Beginner flat walk of about 2 miles on hard flat surface. Eg. Half Prom on Aberavon Beach

3 – Flat walk of approx 3 miles or so. Full prom walk on Aberavon Beach

4 – Flat 3 mile walk but may have sand or rougher or slippery terrain. 

5 – Approx 5 miles flat walk. Canals etc.

6 – Over 5 miles on relatively flat surfaces

7 – Over 5 miles with gentle inclines

8 – Longer distance good health with steeper inclines

9 – Difficult walks requiring good fitness levels. Includes Hill climbing, rough terrain and distance.

10 – Very difficult requiring high fitness. Pen y Fan, Snowdon.
